Portwell Releases a Compact COM Express Module That Boosts Existing System Performance with Intel® Atom™ Processor E3900 Product Family (Formerly Codenamed “Apollo Lake”)

The New PCOM-B641VG Offers Higher Performance and InnOvaTive Design for Automation, Healthcare and Thin Client Systems

Portwell, Inc., a world-leading innovator in the Industrial PC (IPC) market and an Associate member of the Intel® Internet of Things (IoT) Solutions Alliance today announces the release of the PCOM-B641VG, a Type 6 COM Express Compact (95mm x 95mm) module based on the 14nm Intel® Atom™ processor E3900 product family (6W~12W). The PCOM-B641VG COM Express module offers many valuable features, including a wide range of optional I/O flexibility like Gen2 PCI Express with mature eco-system, enabler for greater media competence like accelerated DRM (Digital Rights Management) for encoding and decoding. The module is also rated to function at less than 50 DPM (defects per million). Portwell’s PCOM-B641VG is designed to help customers who are currently using COM Express module products upgrade their systems without having to change existing carrier boards and operating systems. This helps boost system performance with prolonged service life for another 7 years, maximizing our customers’ return on investment.

The compact PCOM-B641VG COM Express module supports up to 32GB DDR3L 1600/1866 MT/s SDRAM on two 204-pin SODIMM sockets, making it faster than its predecessor. Its expansion interface supports four (max.) PCI Express x1 Gen2 (5.0GT/s) for enhanced video performance and offers the flexibility to be configured to two x2 lanes or one x4 lane. In addition, it supports three high-resolution display interfaces: DP (DisplayPort) or HDMI, VGA and LVDS with double 3D performance compared to its previous generation.

Efficient and Effective Energy Management Enabled by COM Technology

“When designing the PCOM-B641VG, we applied the successful modular computing concept of our COM Express form factor and came up with an even more compact, efficient and economical combination,” says Frederic Wang, manager of Portwell, Inc. “The ultra-low power Intel® Atom™ processor E3900 family is housed on the PCOM-B641VG module board. And in this way,” Wang explains, “we are able to maximize Computer-On-Module (COM) technology to produce a unit that not only outputs under 6W~12W for fan-less applications, but also supports a wide -40°C to 85°C industrial temperature range. With two SODIMM sockets support, the PCOM-B641VG provides a more powerful solution for our customers aiming at IoT and Industry 4.0. On the other hand, it conserves scarce energy resources, minimizes carbon impact and keeps its energy budgets under control. The PCOM-B641VG COM Express module has been enhanced by Portwell in response to market demand for an even lower power platform to take advantage of the Intel® Atom™ processor’s compact design. In fact, since its initial inception, Portwell’s expanding Intel Atom processor-based COM Express product portfolio has now grown to include industrial temperature range support. Portwell’s versatile COM Express modules adapt to these changes by enabling designers to partition commodity host-processors from proprietary baseboards, thereby minimizing current and future design risks during the initial phase of development. This design of separating the CPU-upgradable module from system specific I/O carrier boards further safeguards development investments and lowers total cost of ownership. In addition, Portwell can also provide services to clients on the carrier board design and development, review schematics and BIOS customization. PORTWELL ANNOUNCES PEB-2773 3.5" FORM FACTOR EMBEDDED SYSTEM BOARD UTILIZING LATEST GENERATION INTEL® ATOM™ APOLLO LAKE SOC

The New PEB-2773 Offers Low power and Fan-less Design for Automatic Control, Kiosks and Digital Signage Systems.

The new Intel® Atom™ processors integrate the Intel® Gen.9 3D graphics engine with up to 18 EUs (Execution Units) that improves the performance and supports 4K codec encoding/decoding. It also supports one dual-channel 24bit LVDS connection, one DisplayPort (DP) and HDMI on rear I/O with resolution up to 4096x2160. The 204-pin non-ECC SODIMM provides maximum memory, making it capable of supporting up to 8GB of DDR3L. PEB-2773 supports a total of six COM ports, six USB 3.0 ports and dual gigabit Ethernet. The PEB-2773 represents the latest state-of-the-art innovation that results from the years of experience Portwell has gained as a manufacturer of high-quality computer boards.

The Portwell PEB-2773 3.5" embedded board is built with the Intel® Atom™ processor E3900 product family. Not only does it operate with thermal design power (TDP) under 12W for fan-less applications, but it also supports a wide industrial temperature range from -40°C to 85°C and a wide voltage of power input from 12V to 24V for rugged applications.

The PEB-2773, designed with Apollo Lake Intel® Atom™ processor E3900 series, features one DDR3L 1333/1600/1866 MHz SO-DIMM socket equipped with up to 8GB DDR3L memory. It also integrates Intel® graphics, supporting DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.2, OpenCL 2.0 plus high-performance, flexible hardware decoding to decode multiple high-resolution 4K videos in parallel. In addition, it supports up to 4096x2160 pixels with DisplayPort, HDMI port, and dual-channel LVDS up to 1920x1200 pixels, and is designed with the flexibility for connecting up to three independent display interfaces. Support for a total of six USB 3.0 ports ensures fast data transmission with low-power consumption. Two 5 Gb/s PCI Express 2.0 lanes can be for use as 1x full-size Mini-PCIe (supporting mSATA) and 1x half-size Mini-PCIe socket. It also supports one SATA 3.0 interfaces with up to 6 Gb/s to allow quick and flexible system expansions. Intel Ethernet Controller I210-IT provides dual Gigabit Ethernet LAN access via the two RJ45 ports.

PORTWELL RELEASES ETX® 3.0 MODULE TO EXTEND LEGACY APPLICATIONS AND LIFECYCLES

The New PEM-E205VLA Built with Superior Legacy Features Powered by Energy-Efficient 32-bit x86 Processor

Alongside of energy efficiency and legacy-interface support, the PEM-E205VLA is designed with powerful 32-bit multi-core processor technology and programmable graphics processing unit (GPU) compatible with Microsoft® Windows®-based, Linux® and many other popular 32-bit RTOS.

Efficient, Effective and Economical Solutions Using ETX Technology

When designing the PEM-E205VLA and its carrier board, Portwell applied the successful mother-daughter relationship of the highly-integrated computer-on-module ETX form factor, and came up with a compact, efficient and economical combination. The ultra low power Vortex86DX3 system-on-a-chip (SoC) is housed on the PEM-E205VLA module board and the development kit carrier board comes with all of the necessary connectors. In this way, Portwell is able to maximize ETX 3.02 technology to produce a unit that not only outputs under 5W for fanless applications, but also supports a wide -40ºC to 85ºC industrial temperature range, enabling faster and better integration with Portwell's best-in-class industrial solutions.

Furthermore, the PEM-E205VLA ETX module supports up to 2GB DDR3 memory, 32KB write through 8-way L1 cache, 512KB write through/write back 4-way L2 cache, PCIE bus at 2.5 GHz, ROM controller, ISA, I2C, SPI, IPC (Internal Peripheral Controllers with DMA and interrupt timer/counter included), Fast Ethernet, UART FIFO, USB 2.0 Host and IDE/SATA.

Expansion for the PEM-E205VLA ETX module includes ISA interface with controllers integrated into processor-enhancing capabilities to support 8/16-bit ISA device with Zero-Wait-State. In addition, the module supports dual displays, VGA and LVDS with greater graphic performance compared to its previous generation. The resolution for one display interface supports up to 1920x1440@60Hz with 234MHz video clock, and the other, 1920x1200, 1x DVO (24bits) and 1x D-SUB or 2x DVO (12bits x2). The GPU control unit integrated in the processor supports H.264 1080P video decode.
